Over the past months there has been an increase in attempted burglary's in the local ward. As a Ward SNT we would like to share a few tips and prevention ideas to help secure your properties. Preventing burglaries involves securing entry points, using visible deterrents, maintaining your property, and creating the impression that your home is occupied. Secure Doors and Windows • Install deadbolt locks on all exterior doors and ensure sliding doors have special locks or security bars. • Use window locks and consider reinforced glass or security film for vulnerable windows. • Keep garage doors closed and locked, and secure garden sheds and basement windows. Lighting and Visibility • Use bright exterior lighting and motion-activated floodlights to eliminate dark hiding spots. • Keep bushes and trees trimmed to prevent burglars from hiding near windows or doors. • Consider convex security mirrors to remove blind spots around your property. Surveillance and Deterrents • Install security cameras or even dummy cameras to create the impression of monitoring. • Use doorbell cameras or smart home systems to monitor activity remotely. • Set interior lights, TVs, or radios on timers to simulate occupancy when away. Mail, Deliveries, and Property Management • Arrange for mail and package collection or use USPS “Hold Mail” when away. • Keep your lawn maintained and remove clutter from yards to signal an active household. Community and Personal Vigilance • Report suspicious activity to local police and participate in neighbourhood watch programs. • Avoid leaving notes indicating absence, like “Gone shopping”. • Consider self-defence training and emergency preparedness for added safety. Additional Tips • Use thorny bushes under windows to discourage approach. • Ensure all locks are checked and replaced if outdated or easy to bypass. • Combine multiple layers of security—physical barriers, lighting, surveillance, and community awareness—for maximum deterrence. By implementing these strategies, you can significantly reduce the likelihood of a burglary and create a safer environment for your home and family. South Norwood SNT |
